A Beginner's Guide to Golf Style: What I Actually Wear on the Course

When I first started learning to golf, there was no doubt that one of the things I was most excited about was dressing the part. Before purchasing the first cute outfit that made me feel like a professional golfer, I did what I always do when entering a new environment: research.

Because there is nothing quite like spending money on the wrong gear.

One thing became clear very quickly: golf clothing is not about looking good; it is about performance. Looking polished is simply a fortunate side effect.

As someone who appreciates quality products, I've always believed that the best gear for any sport is the gear that allows you to perform comfortably. The less you're thinking about your outfit, the more you're thinking about your swing.

Learning to golf in Miami taught me this lesson almost immediately.

I arrived armed with my favorite short-sleeve polo, only to wonder why so many experienced golfers were walking around in long sleeves under the blazing Florida sun. As it turns out, they knew something I didn't.

Long-Sleeve Performance Tops

Long-sleeve golf tops quickly became one of the most important pieces in my golf wardrobe.

The key is finding fabrics with UPF 50 sun protection. In Miami, sun protection isn't optional; it's part of the uniform.

Finding good ones wasn't easy, mostly because the best styles are perpetually sold out. Nike consistently makes some excellent options, including long-sleeve performance tops and golf-specific polos that strike a balance between function and style.

Long-Sleeve Polo Styles

If you're looking for something that feels slightly more polished, Nike also makes long-sleeve golf polos that have become some of my favorite pieces on the course.

They offer the classic, traditional golf look while providing the same performance benefits as a standard sun shirt. I especially love them for early morning tee times, slightly cooler days, or when I want to look a bit more put together without sacrificing comfort. It's one of those pieces that feels equally appropriate at the driving range, on the course, or sitting down for lunch afterward.

Golf Gloves

My very first golf purchase was a glove.

I knew from the start that I wanted one from Ralph Lauren; my favorite American brand; and thankfully, they happen to make beautiful golf gloves that perform just as well as they look.

Many of their styles combine a nylon-elastane shell with leather palms and trim, creating the ideal combination of flexibility, grip, and durability. It's one of those pieces that quietly elevates the entire experience.

Skorts

If you're considering skirts for golf, allow me to save you some trial and error: buy skorts.

Golf involves a surprising amount of bending, walking, crouching, and retrieving golf balls. Add a breeze into the equation, and you'll quickly understand why skorts have become the gold standard.

They're practical, polished, and elegant; the trifecta.

Bonus points if they have pockets. You'll find yourself using them constantly for tees, markers, and the occasional golf ball.

Sports Bras & Base Layers

Perhaps not the most glamorous topic, but certainly one of the most important.

Golf means hours outdoors, often under direct sunlight. Even though it may not feel as intense as a high-impact workout, you'll still be sweating far more than you expect.

A supportive sports bra made from moisture-wicking fabric can make a significant difference in overall comfort, especially during summer rounds.

Twill Pocket Pants

Twill pocket pants are permanently on my golf essentials list.

They're classic, versatile, and look appropriate at nearly every course. Navy, khaki, and white remain timeless choices that pair well with virtually everything in your closet.

They also transition seamlessly from the course to lunch afterward, which is always a bonus.

Shorts

For shorts, G/FORE has become one of my favorite discoveries.

The length is exactly what I look for: not too short, not too long. They hit just above the knee in a flattering way without looking awkward or overly athletic.

The stretchy, high-waisted fabric also makes them incredibly comfortable during a full round.

Shoes

When you're first learning golf, don't feel pressured to purchase the most advanced golf shoes immediately.

I started with a simple pair of Nike sneakers and they worked perfectly well while I learned the fundamentals.

Once you're playing more consistently, investing in a dedicated golf shoe becomes worthwhile. For grip and stability, FootJoy's spiked options are among the best. They offer excellent traction while maintaining a classic golf aesthetic that never feels overly sporty.

Hats & Visors

A good visor or hat is practically mandatory for sun protection.

While Malbon leans more toward the lifestyle and fashion side of golf, I genuinely like their visors. They strike that difficult balance between sporty and stylish.

That said, I have one personal complaint about both hats and visors: as a beginner, I sometimes feel like they slightly block my view during setup.

This may be entirely psychological, but if you've ever found yourself adjusting your visor before every shot, know that you're not alone.

For more traditional options, Nike and Titleist both make excellent hats and visors that you'll see on courses everywhere.

Final Thoughts

One of the most enjoyable surprises about learning golf has been discovering how thoughtfully designed golf apparel actually is.

What initially looks like a very specific dress code turns out to be a collection of practical solutions to spending four hours outdoors while attempting to hit a tiny ball consistently.

The best golf wardrobe isn't necessarily the trendiest or most expensive; it's the one that keeps you comfortable, protected from the elements, and focused on your game.

What I particularly love about selecting thoughtful golf clothing is how easy it is to mix and match. Once you invest in a few quality staples; a great long-sleeve top, a classic polo, a navy skort, white pants, or a versatile visor; you can create countless combinations without needing an entirely new outfit for every round. Much like golf itself, there is an elegance in simplicity.

Building a golf wardrobe thoughtfully allows every piece to work together, making getting dressed for a round feel effortless. Looking like you belong on the course is simply the bonus. Here’s the complete list of my favorite pieces. Happy Golfing!
